Country information
To the west, Cameroon is bordered by Nigeria, to the northeast by Chad, to the east by the Central African Republic, and to the south by Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and the Republic of Congo. The country owns part of the coast of the Gulf of Guinea, which gives it access to the Atlantic Ocean. Cameroon's natural wealth includes beaches, deserts, savannas, jungles and mountains. The highest peak is Fako (4040 meters) in Mount Cameroon, and the lowest point is the Atlantic coast. The country is inhabited by over 280 different ethnic groups. The official languages are French and English. The capital is called Yaounde. The area of the country is 475,442 km², and the population is about 30 million people.
Unlike many other African countries, Cameroon lacks bloody civil wars and infighting, which favors the development of infrastructure and industry.
Many tourists refer to Cameroon as "Africa in miniature" due to its great geographical diversity: beaches, coastline, mountains, jungles, savannas and deserts. Equatorial forests predominate in the southern parts of the country. They are also found along the Atlantic coast, where some of the wettest spots in the world are located. They observe dry and rainy periods, and during the dry the temperatures are very high. During this period, most rivers dry up. Average temperatures in Cameroon vary between 22 °C and 25 °C.
