Country information
The Republic of Namibia is a country in southern Africa on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. It borders Angola to the north, Zambia to the northeast, Botswana to the east and South Africa to the south. It owes its name to the Namib desert, and its old name is South-West Africa. The capital is the city of Windhoek. The population of Namibia is over 2,700,000 people, and the area is 825,615 km².
Namibia has been inhabited since ancient times by the Bushmen tribes. Later, the Damara and Namaqua Huttentot tribes arrived here. In the 14th century, they were all pushed out by tribes coming from the north from the Ovambo and Herero Bantu-speaking group. Much later, the Europeans arrived in the area.
A large part of the territory of Namibia is a plateau with a height of 900 to 1500 m. It is deeply divided by river valleys and tectonic slopes into separate parts - plateaus and highlands (Kaoko, Damara, Namaqualand, etc.). The maximum height of the country is Mount Köningstein (2606 m), rising in the Brandberg mountain range. In the east, the plateau gradually lowers to the western part of the Kalahari slope, in the north - to the salt flat Etosha, and in the west it descends steeply through the so-called A major setback to the hilly coastal plain occupied by the Namib Coastal Desert. The climate of the country is tropical, very dry. The average temperature in the warmest month (January) is from 18 to 27°C, and in the coldest (July) from 12 to 16°C. In the highest parts, temperatures below 0°C occur in winter.
One of the world's largest national parks, Etosha (22,275 km²), is home to zebras, antelopes, elephants, giraffes, ostriches, lions, leopards and many species of birds. Another large national park is the "Skeleton Coast" (16,000 km²), "Namib" and others.
